I met Randy at one of the recent Crime Stopper fundraisers down in Columbus. He was definitely one of the coolest dudes you’d ever want to meet. He touched me with his kindness and humor. My sincere condolences and regards to everyone who knew him.

I only met Randy recently and for a very brief time yet in that time he became my friend. I met him when I came over from the Uk to try and help find Brian we were doing a pilot show for bodyhunter. The first time we met we clicked you know ? some people you just like. You know they are good souls this I saw in Randy. We continued to keep in touch via email when I returned home, now I will have no more emails from him and I will truly miss them. They say you can tell the measure of a man by counting his friends well Randy your a million miles high my friend.
miss you cant believe it really.
goodnight lovely man sleep tight

I have not met Randy personally, however, have spoke to him over phone and email. But in this time, he became your friend and spoke highly of his wife and sons. I hope the fight for Brian does not come to a end. And our hearts and prayers are out there for him. I asked why everyday, but never seem to know the real answers.

Just like many others, I too was touched by Randy’s kindness. He was such a strong person and an inspiration to me. I truely wish that we had more people like him on this earth.

I just left a comment on the other page, but then saw the link for the family, hence my writing here…I AM SORRY for your loss…About six months ago, I had began correspondence with Randy, and he was SUCH a wonderful person…He had always something kind to say, and was a vibrant soul…I felt so BAD for Randy–with all the tragedy that had occured…And I do wish I had conversed w/him more frequently…I was busy w/my own issues, unfortunately…I can say that I am glad knowing that he may rest in peace now, with his beloved wife in heaven…It’s so baffling on why bad things happen to good people, but sometimes there’s just no explanation for such things…Derek, if you read this…I pray that you are okay, and that you have a support system to lean on…I left my email, in case you (or anybody else) needs a friend during these trying times…I wish you all the best, and please–KEEP THE FAITH!!!
LOVE,
LAURIE

I met Randy April 1st of 2007 – he treated me like he had known me for a million years. I know for a fact he would have done anything he could have for me and often tried to. Losing him is society’s loss and a shock I’m still not over.
God bless all who knew him

Randy was like a lighthouse to me in such a dark time in my life. We became good friends while my niece, Holly Metzger Carruthers, was missing. He would call or email me to just to be supportive, and keep my spirits up. When we found Holly 3 months later in the Mohican River, Randy felt our pain too. He was a very genuinely nice person. I hope the search for Brian continues till hes found. Rest in peace, Randy. Lets hope we can find Brian! My sympathies to the family. I like to believe Randy has joined his family in Heaven.

I never met Randy, but I did talk with him on the phone and talk to him online through emails. I know he will be greatly missed. I hope that his family will never stop searching for Brian and hopefully he will be found. My deepest sympathy to his family. With love and respect.

I have known Randy for a few years now, and knew Renee as well. Wow, what an amazing couple, with an amazing family! My prayers are with you Derek, in finding Brian and in finding peace in all of this. Randy worked so hard on the search and I hope that his work will continue through all of us. We who were touched by Randy should grasp onto his efforts. I think his heart is now with the love of his life, and at least there is peace in that.

It’s rare to meet someone like Randy … so passionate, relentless, hopeful, kind, appreciative and honest. I interviewed Randy many times when I was reporting for NBC 4, and I will never forget him. I was so shocked and saddened to hear the news of his passing … and yet it brings me great comfort to think of Randy at peace, reunited with his family in a place far better than our own, with a God more loving than we ever dared hope. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest…you will find rest for your souls” (Jesus, Matthew 11:28). “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4). That’s the peace I wish for Randy … a peace that passes all understanding.
