On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at approximately 5:00pm, the Flight Crew, consisting of Columbus Police Officer Jeffrey Ferguson (the pilot) and Officer Edward Cox, had just finished an auto-rotation at Berliner Park when they heard a police radio call concerning a male in the water yelling for help in the area of Greenlawn and Front. Officer Ferguson flew directly to the area of the bridge. The Flight Crew immediately noticed what appeared to be a person on the edge of the ice in the middle part of the river about 100 yards south of the bridge. Officer Ferguson flew the helicopter towards the victim and was able to get low enough for him to reach up and take hold of the left skid. Officer Ferguson then gradually pulled the victim approximately 25 feet closer to the bank on the west side of the river. Patrol officers deployed the “Throw Bag” and the man was able to finally grab the rope. The officers pulled him to the shore. The victim was transported to Grant hospital in stable condition.

The award presentation, which will tell the rest of this amazing story, will take place on Wednesday, March 5th around 9:45am, at the Fire Fighters Union Hall located at 379 W. Broad Stree
