Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, along with the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9 and United Dairy Farmers, is pleased to recognize Columbus Police Officer Jeffrey Mooney as the recipient of the Bryan Hurst/Tony Luzio Officer of the Month Award for September. Please read details below:
Early on the morning of August 9, 2015, CPD Officer Jeffrey Mooney assisted Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper Landis on a traffic stop at N. Pearl Street and 14th Avenue. The driver was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and released to the custody of his girlfriend, who was a passenger in the vehicle. Officer Mooney confirmed her identity as Yasmine Thompson.
The following morning the United Dairy Farmers at 2094 N. High Street was robbed by a male black individual brandishing a silver revolver. A female accomplice jumped the counter, and employees were forced to empty the cash registers. The pair escaped with an undetermined amount of cash.
Later that week, Officer Mooney was reviewing the CPD Facebook page where surveillance photos from the UDF holdup had been posted. He immediately recognized the female accomplice as wearing the exact same clothing as Ms. Thompson had worn in the previous OVI incident. Upon reviewing his cruiser video, Officer Mooney confirmed that Ms. Thompson was indeed the woman who had participated in the UDF robbery. He then contacted Trooper Landis at the West Jefferson post to obtain I.D. information on the male driver from the original OVI arrest, who was identified as Everett Jackson. Subsequent attempts to re- locate the vehicle were unsuccessful, so Officer Mooney forwarded his information to the CPD Robbery Squad. Det. Shawn Lent conducted a photo lineup with UDF employees, who were able to identify both Thompson and Jackson as the robbery suspects. Robbery warrants were filed on both individuals and both suspects have since been arrested in New York and are being extradited to Columbus.
The award presentation will take place on Wednesday, September 7th, around 9:45am, at the Fire Fighters Union Hall, 2nd floor, located at 379 W. Broad Street.
