Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, local clergy, and public officials offered prayer for the safety and protection of our local law enforcement and firefighters in this New Year at our 9th annual “Bless the Badge” ceremony.
During the event, we also recognized Columbus Police Officers Scott Wright, Ryan Erney, Jared Barsotti, and Alan Bennett as the recipients of the Bryan Hurst/Tony Luzio Officer of the Month Award for the month of January. Please see details regarding Officers of the Month below:
On the evening of September 30, 2017, Officer Ryan Erney was dispatched to the area of Interstate 71 and E. Broad Street on report of a man assaulting an individual with a piece of wood. Upon his arrival, Officer Erney located the victim of the attack, who pointed out the suspect across the street. This individual was highly agitated and attempting to chase down an unidentified woman. As Officer Erney approached, the suspect reached quickly into his waistband and yelled, “Kill me!” while backing away. Officer Erney drew his service weapon and ordered the suspect to stop. By this time, Officer Scott Wright had arrived on the scene. Together the officers pursued the suspect to the Broad Street overpass at I-71, where he attempted to jump over the concrete wall separating the on-ramp from the freeway. Together the officers grabbed the suspect and struggled to keep him from plunging down onto the interstate. At this time Officers Jared Barsotti and Alan Bennett arrived on the scene, and together the officers were able to pull the man back over the barricade to safety. He was quickly taken into custody, and due to his disturbed state fire medics were called to the scene.
Bless the Badge took place on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 10:00 am, at the Firefighters Union Hall, 379 West Broad Street. A reception followed.
