On Sunday, July 10, 2016, at 11:09pm, Columbus Police responded to the area of 656 Bankview Drive, on the report of an unresponsive male lying in the parking lot. Upon arrival, the officers found the victim suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by Prairie Township Engine 241. The victim, Gregory Fanning, was later identified by the serial number on his heart defibrillator. The investigation has revealed that Gregory Fanning was wearing athletic wear and a reflective vest. He was known as an avid 5K walker/runner who routinely walks/runs several miles in the late mornings and in the late evenings. It is unknown if he was in the habit of using the same routes, but did begin and end his workouts near his residence in the 5200 block of Open Meadows Drive. Since property was missing from his person and he did not have ties to any criminal activity/history or drug use, it is believed Mr. Fanning was the victim of a robbery.
