This week’s “Crime of the Week” focuses on a series of Thefts that occurred in Dublin, Ohio.
On Monday, October 23, 2018, and Tuesday October 24, 2018, between the hours of 7:00 pm and 8:00pm, an unknown white male entered the Kroger store located at 7100 Hospital Drive and the Kroger store located at 7625 Sawmill Road, respectively. In both thefts, the suspect went to the cashier and asked for several cartons of cigarettes. The cashier grabbed several cigarette cartons and rung them up along with a few other small, incidental items presented by the suspect for purchase. The suspect chatted with the cashier, making small talk in both thefts to distract the cashier. Once the cashier completed ringing up the items, the suspect slid some kind of card, pretending to pay. He then pressed random buttons on the card reader machine as if he was completing his portion of the checkout process. He continued to make small talk with the cashier, grabbed the bagged up items and cigarettes before fumbling around on the keypad a final time and walked out before the payment process was completed. The cashier then attempted to complete the transaction while he walked away but the form of payment was not valid or was declined. By that point, the suspect was out of the store and it was too late for anyone to catch him. This same suspect has committed thefts at Kroger stores throughout the Columbus area using this same method. The suspect is described as: Male/White, mid-20s to mid- 30s, approximately 150-170 lbs., 5’8”-5’10”, pale skin, dark brown/black moustache, possible goatee, wearing blue jeans, gray tennis shoes, gray zip-up hooded jacket, blue button-up shirt, and a gray toboggan style winter cap during both thefts. Additionally, he may have a tattoo on his left forearm of a heartbeat or noise/soundwave design. Surveillance photos of the suspect may be viewed on our website, www.stopcrime.org.
