Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, along with the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9, is pleased to recognize Columbus Police Detectives Brett Bodell and Tennis Jude as the recipients of the Bryan Hurst/Tony Luzio Officer of the Month Award for the month of September.

On July 20, 2010, at 6:25 PM, CPD SRB detectives Brett Bodell and Tennis Jude were in the area of Beechcroft High School observing a Columbus Public Schools Football scrimmage for possible gang activity. As the officers were in the parking lot, they observed several subjects gathering together, and an altercation between two groups started to occur. As they started to walk towards the altercation they observed a male subject pull from his waistband a concealed handgun. The subject, now suspect, pointed the gun towards the crowd about 10-15 feet away and fired the gun at the crowd. This caused everyone in the area, including the players, coaches, and parents to start running. Officers Bodell and Jude ran towards the subject yelling “police get down!” as many people across the field were frantically running for cover, trying to get away from the shooter. The subject started to run across the field with the gun still in his possession. The subject threw the gun to the ground and was apprehended after falling down. Officers Bodell and Jude were able to place him in custody without further incident. Due to their efforts in being very vigilant and responsive to an “active shooter” situation, they were able to bring this incident to a safe conclusion. For their actions we are happy to be naming Detectives Brett Bodell and Tennis Jude our Crime Stoppers officers of the month for September of 2010.

The award presentation, which will provide the “rest of the story,” will take place on Wednesday, September 1st, starting between 9:45 and 10:00am, at the Fire Fighters Union Hall located at 379 W. Broad Street.

Any questions, please contact Kevin Miles, Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, at 614-206-6315.

The Columbus Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is asking for help from the public to end a recent rash of storm drain grate thefts. Since last Friday, more than 50 such thefts have been reported, mostly from the south and southwest sections of Columbus but scattered incidents have also been reported in other parts of the city. Besides these thefts from storm drain inlets maintained by the City of Columbus, there have been an unknown number of similar incidents in private apartment complexes.

“These thefts pose a significant danger to the public,” said Director Tatyana Arsh. “We are running low on reserve grates, which could lead to large open holes along curbs and corners. In addition, replacing these grates represents a significant strain on our personnel and other resources that could be better invested elsewhere.”

DPU is working closely with Columbus police and Central Ohio Crime Stoppers in an effort to apprehend those responsible, who are believed to be attempting to sell the grates as scrap metal. Investigators are following up on reports that those involved could include two or three white males driving a white vehicle.

Additional details about these storm drain grates:

•	The grates are made of cast iron, are 36” long and weigh about 100 pounds each.
•	Each grate costs about $90 to replace.

Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to call Columbus police at (614) 645-4545 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 461-8477 or toll free at 1 877 645-8477. Tips may be also be submitted to Crime Stoppers online at http://stopcrime.org/.

In addition, missing storm drain grates can be reported 24 hours a day directly to DPU’s Sewer Maintenance Operations Center at 614 645-7102.

Ceasefires may be declared as part of a formal treaty, but they have also been called as part of an informal understanding between opposing forces.

Faith based leadership, mothers of slain youth and concerned citizens of the city of Columbus are out raged and taking action against the gun violence in the streets of Columbus.

Ceasefire Columbus is an aggressive and passionate group of community leaders, activist and church clergy who want to send a clear message to the City of Columbus’ youth. Simply, WE CARE. We care about their lives, we care about their future and we care to teach them something different and resolve their issues with no bloodshed.
